What is a seed ball?

A seed ball, also known as a seed bomb, is a method of sowing seeds by encapsulating them within a mixture of clay, compost, and seeds. This works as a deterrent to seed predation by animals, provides nutrients and gives the wildflower seeds a better chance of germination.

They are easy to spread and can easily provide you a maintenance free garden. Seed balls require no till so less disruption to the landscape.

About Us

Our journey began in Japan in 2001 when I established my first urban garden in Saitima, Japan. It started as a simple garden planting tomatoes, peppers and flowers in an abandoned flower bed. A local then informed me that after my departure, the city designated it as a public garden. This moment ignited a lifelong passion for gardening.

In 2014, Bloom Bombs was born out of a quest to explore innovative methods of planting wildflowers. During our research, we discovered the teachings of Masanobu Fukuoka, a revered natural farmer and philosopher credited with reviving the ancient practice of seed balls. Drawing inspiration from his principles, we crafted our own recipe. Today, our mission at Bloom Bombs is to simplify the process of spreading native, non-invasive wildflower seeds, making it not only easier but also enjoyable, while increasing the success rate of growth.

We remain committed to giving back to our communities by donating a portion of our proceeds to local charities dedicated to planting native species. Currently we are donating to the Santa Monica Mountain Fund Milkweed Program

“…. scatter them so innocently. Sow seed balls with a child-like mind whenever, wherever…. Give yourself to whatever you do one hundred percent or not at all, and do not doubt. Everything will be all right. Just spread seed balls and Nature will do the rest.”

-Masanobu Fukuoka
